Carolina Hurricanes Adapt Goalie Tandem Strategy for Playoffs

The Carolina Hurricanes have embraced a goalie tandem strategy during the Stanley Cup Final, as evidenced by head coach Rod Brind'Amour's decision to pull Frederik Andersen in favor of Brandon Bussi in Game 3 against the Vegas Golden Knights. This move was initially perceived as a way to rest Andersen after a challenging second period, but it highlights a growing trend in the NHL where teams find it increasingly difficult to rely on a single goaltender throughout the playoffs. Traditionally, teams would have a clear starter who played the majority of games, but this season has seen a shift. Only one goaltender, Karel Vejmelka of the Utah Mammoth, reached the 60-start threshold, while many others have shared the workload more evenly. The Hurricanes started the season with Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov as their tandem, but Kochetkov's injury led to Bussi being promoted from the AHL. Bussi has stepped up significantly, playing a team-high 39 games, while Andersen played 35. In the playoffs, Andersen made 15 consecutive starts before Brind'Amour opted for Bussi in Game 4, a decision that paid off as Bussi helped the Hurricanes even the series. This shift to utilizing multiple goaltenders is becoming common, with nine of the 16 playoff teams adopting similar strategies. The Carolina Hurricanes' approach reflects a broader trend in the NHL, where managing goaltenders effectively can be crucial for postseason success.
